🌍 Specialists in Chemical First Aid Training
We’ve developed a cost-effective and accessible way to educate your workforce on Chemical First Aid, ensuring compliance with Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and COSHH regulations. 🧪💼
⚠️ Why Chemical First Aid Training is Essential for Your Business
According to the HSE (Health and Safety Executive):
“Where work involves higher levels of hazards such as chemicals, employers must provide additional training for first-aiders to handle injuries resulting from these special hazards.”
(HSE, 2024 – Page 14, Section 15)
Read the HSE First Aid Regulations here.
HSE also emphasizes that only qualified instructors can deliver this specialized training:
“Training providers need to demonstrate their competence in delivering first-aid training, supported by relevant background and qualifications.”
Under Regulation 12 of the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations (COSHH), employers must provide employees with “suitable and sufficient information, instruction and training” where work is liable to expose them to substances hazardous to health.
In addition, the COSHH Approved Code of Practice (L5) makes clear that training must be appropriate to the level of risk and the type of work carried out. Where risk assessments identify a foreseeable risk of chemical burns, splashes, or toxic exposure, any training should extend beyond standard First Aid at Work content.
In practice, many organisations have strong First Aid at Work provision, and strong with chemical spill training, but they are not as strong in training their staff on what to do if the chemical spills on their staff’s skin, in their eyes, or if their staff inhale toxic vapour or gases. Therefore, their chemical-specific emergency response is not always covered in sufficient depth to meet the “suitable and sufficient” threshold under COSHH.
United States (USA) Regulatory Context
In the United States, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) takes a similar risk‑based approach to chemical hazards and emergency response.
OSHA regulation 29 CFR 1910.151 requires employers to ensure that employees are adequately trained to render first aid where immediate medical treatment is not readily available. Where there is a foreseeable risk of exposure to corrosive or injurious chemicals, OSHA further requires the provision of emergency eye and body flushing facilities, recognising the need for immediate action following chemical contact.
The OSHA Hazard Communication Standard (29 CFR 1910.1200) requires employers to provide employees with effective information and training on hazardous chemicals, including emergency measures detailed within Safety Data Sheets (SDS). This training must enable employees to understand the hazards they face and the actions required in the event of exposure.
As with COSHH in the UK, OSHA training requirements are performance‑based, meaning training must be appropriate to the nature and level of risk identified. Where risk assessments identify a foreseeable risk of chemical splashes, skin contact, inhalation of vapours, or toxic exposure, reliance on generic first aid training alone may not be sufficient.
In practice, many organisations meet OSHA requirements for general first aid and chemical handling, but do not always provide sufficient training on what to do if chemicals contact the skin, eyes, or are inhaled. As a result, chemical‑specific emergency first aid competence is not always addressed in adequate depth.
Our Chemical First Aid at Work programme is designed to address this gap and provide documented, chemical‑specific competence aligned to identified OSHA chemical risks, supporting compliance across both UK and US regulatory frameworks.
Our Chemical First Aid at Work programme is designed specifically to address this gap and provide documented competence aligned to any identified COSHH risks.
